A Celebration of Gin Lands in Phnom Penh
The gin-trification movement steps up a gear this week when the now annual East Imperial Gin Jubilee makes a return to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh.
Premium beverage maker East Imperial celebrates all things gin with its fifth annual East Imperial Gin Jubilee. With three national jubilees held in Singapore from 2013 to 2015, and the inaugural regional jubilee held last year, the festival seeks to spread gin culture across Asia, with individual jubilees in Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore and a new addition this year – Shanghai.
East Imperial is creating a stir on what a traditional gin & tonic is, where Gin Jubilee is a means to unveil this exciting evolution. Bringing together some of the world’s finest gins and the region’s leading bars and bartenders, the annual gin festival is attended by a myriad of gin novices and enthusiasts alike.
The East Imperial Gin Jubilee aims to boost gin knowledge and appreciation across multiple venues where people come together to sample innovative variations of the classic G&T.
Founder of East Imperial, Kevin Law-Smith, says, “We are thrilled to be back with the fifth edition of the Gin Jubilee, working in partnership with Proof & Company. From last year’s first-ever regional edition, it has been extremely heartening to see more people from around the region come together in celebration of the wonderful world of gin, and the level of creativity showcased by the bars and bartenders who participated in the competition was immense.
“This year, we anticipate even more and better bars joining in the festivities, and we look forward to each country’s audiences experiencing the intricate and inspiring Gin & Tonic cocktail creations.”
From Oct. 12 to 14, the jubilee will take over a series of Phnom Penh bars as mixologists battle it out to secure the top spot with their creative take on the G&T. A range of jubilee activities will also take place, including master classes to pop ups, gin rambles, gin tastings and the highly-anticipated Gin Lane street party.
With a diverse mix of gins partaking in Gin Jubilee 2017, consumers can anticipate internationally acclaimed names such as Gin Mare, Hendrick’s Gin and Bombay Sapphire, and also crowd-favourite boutique brands such as Fords Gin, St. George and The Botanist, to provide distinctive flavour profiles and novel drinking experiences for participants.
Curated carefully, the selection of the finest gins showcased in the jubilees will allow people to explore and learn about new gins and unprecedented ways to imbibe them.
Asia’s Best G&T
During the jubilee, more than 110 top bars from the region will compete for the title of “Asia’s Best Gin & Tonic”, by creating unique Gin & Tonic renditions. Each bar will pair one of four East Imperial tonic waters with a partner gin brand, following which the individual bartender can demonstrate their creativity with the rest of the recipe.
The culmination of the East Imperial Gin Jubilee sees the crowning of one bar and one bartender with the Silver Tankard for each participating city’s “Best Gin & Tonic”. The bartenders who win the title for the “Best Gin & Tonic” from each city will travel to Singapore in December to compete for the ultimate title of “Asia’s Best Gin & Tonic” at the jubilee grand finale.
Best Ginstagram Post
To vote for a favourite Gin & Tonic in the jubilee, consumers must follow East Imperial on Instagram, post a picture of their favourite bar’s Gin & Tonic, and tag East Imperial. Then, consumers must accompany the post with the bar’s name, and use the official hashtag #GinJubilee2017.
The best Instagram post of each city’s jubilee will be selected by the jubilee panel, and winners will receive a three-day trip to Singapore to experience “Asia’s Best Gin & Tonic” grand finale in person. 2016 Participating Bars Asia houses some of the finest drinking capitals of the world, and East Imperial Gin Jubilee 2016 saw the participation of many internationally acclaimed bars from the various countries, including 13 that appeared on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2017.
