Mad Monkey Hostels Gears Up To Open Shop In Kampot
Popular guesthouse venture Mad Monkey is gearing up to open a new venture in Kampot in May. The leading youth travel operator, which already runs guesthouses in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, announced on Feb. 20 that The Mad Monkey Kampot will open close to the riverside, just 400 metres from the old town center.
Greg Welch, Mad Monkey Kampot manager, says, “We are very excited about starting our new adventure in Kampot and developing an awesome hostel environment for our guests.”
The 70-bed accommodation pushes the company’s total number of beds per night in Cambodia from 250 to 320. The owners believe their latest addition will help boost the local economy and provide additional employment opportunities for Cambodians.
Priding itself on its strong ethics, The Mad Monkey was founded on the basis of being socially responsible and carrying out ethical business practices in 2010. It provides staff, who are all from disadvantaged backgrounds, with above minimum wage salaries, free English lessons and an education allowance for self-study.
Welch adds that the company is on the hunt for organisations and good causes to back as well as tour operators to team up with.
“The Mad Monkey actively supports a number of NGOs and charitable organisations in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap,” he says. “When we launch we will be searching for partners in Kampot that we can work with to ensure that our business benefits the local community directly by supporting relevant and well-run charitable initiatives in the town.”
