Memphis Celebrates Philippines Independence Day
On Jun. 12, Filipino expats based in Phnom Penh will be playing Original Philippine Music at Memphis Bar by the Riverside in Phnom Penh. This is in celebration of the 115th Philippine Independence day. The event called INDIE PH, The Philippine Independence Day Party, aims to promote Filipino identity in Cambodia as well as help the tourism programme of the Philippines. The show is free to the public.
Featured are, alternative rock band Adobo Conspiracy, indie post punk band Jaworski 7 and musician photographer Leonard Reyes. Michael Coronel will play Filipino classical music (kundiman) and Koro Pilipino, a choir that sings Filipino pop and traditional songs will also join the event.
While Filipino musicians are known to play a lot of international songs, few know that there is a long and deep tradition of original Philippine music. As a nod to Philippine Independence day, INDIE PH will feature an eclectic set of indigenous Philippine music. This will be a rare opportunity for everyone to learn about the music of a nation that lives and breathes the performance arts.
Just like the way it is done in the archipelago, INDIE PH will be a night of camaraderie and music. “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” (Philippine tourism campaign slogan) is sure to be felt in Phnom Penh with INDIE PH.
