In many ways the opening of Metro Hassakan proved a watershed in the Phnom Penh culinary world. The arrival of a sophisticated riverside bistro demonstrated that Cambodia had finally moved itself out of the legacy of the Killing Fields.

Stylish décor lends itself to the sophisticated clientele that passes through its doors each day. The food is a take on the 1-2-3 formula, with bite-size snacks resting alongside Asian tapas and full-size mains. The steaks are excellent as are the tuna steaks and lamb shanks. Those wishing for something a little more local, should share some of the smaller dishes.

By day Metro Hassakan is a laid-back café ideal for having a coffee break while enjoying the free WiFi or a relaxing lunch, while by night the atmosphere livens up with the legendary cocktails, including some of the best Martinis in town and a large range of wines by the glass or bottle. Indoors is smoke-free up to 10pm while the outside terrace is a smoking zone all day as well as offering great views of the river. Metro Hassakan opens from 7.30am to 1am.
