Tropfest Short Film Festival and Competition Launches in South East Asia
More than 20 years after its inception in the Tropicana Cafe, Sydney, Australia, the Tropfest Short Film Festival has become the largest of its kind in the world and is supported by some of the industry’s biggest names.
As part of its continuing global expansion, Tropfest will be launched in South East Asia in 2013 with a premier in Penang, Malaysia from Aug. 30 to Sep. 1 with a film symposium, a music festival, and a free film screening and festival where the winner of the short film competition will be announced. The competition winner receives a five-day industry immersion trip in Los Angeles and a $10 000 cash award. The short film competition is open to all residents and citizens of the ASEAN region regardless of background or experience. All entries must be submitted by Jul. 15. A nominal entrance fee of RM50.00, around $16 per film submitted has been set.
For anyone considering entering the competition there are a few basic guidelines. There are no budget restrictions and entries can be submitted in any format, even mobile phone. Films may not exceed seven minutes, including titles and credits; they can be in any language with subtitles in English. All films must be made specifically for and premiere at Tropfest South East Asia, they must contain the designated Tropfest Signature Item for South East Asia 2013, in this case, rice.
The aim of Tropfest South East Asia is to contribute to the development of the film industry in ASEAN countries by providing opportunities for filmmakers to bring their short films to regional and global attention and offering a platform for the talent that exists in this region.
