Ca Mau forest rangers might be helping illegal loggers

Ca Mau locals believe forest rangers are helping illegal loggers destroy protected mangrove forests in the country’s southernmost province, reports Thanh Nien.

Forests have been destroyed 200 metres inland, according to one local. With destruction getting out of hand, they have filed a petition with the Ca Mau People’s Committee and accused officials at the Kien Vang Protective Forest Management Board of assisting loggers.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2011, V ietnam loses 32,000 hectares of forest every year – illegal logging accounts for six percent of forest loss.

“Forests being destroyed is a true story, and the forest managers are responsible. But we need to clarify whether or not they deliberately assisted in that destruction,” said Pham The Tai, the chief inspector of the agriculture department.
