District 1 begins to install cameras for full surveillance

The local People’s Committee recently authorised District 1 to spend USD $12.7 million on outdoor security cameras in the area to monitor traffic and curb crime. Cameras have already been set up around Ben Thanh Market. District 1’s chairman, Pham Thanh Kien, said that cameras would eventually cover all of the district’s major streets when the funds are entirely disbursed. Each camera sends live images directly to a control center at the district police headquarters, which then dispatches officers. City authorities plan for every downtown street to be under full surveillance by 30 April 2015, which is also the country’s Reunification Day.
