Expat singer covers One Direction in the Mekong

Kyo York, a famous American expat singer living in Ho Chi Minh City, recently released a music video of him covering One Direction’s hit song ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ in the Mekong Delta.

In the video, the singer — who is famous for his fluent Vietnamese and his covers of revered Vietnamese songs — rows a sampan while singing the popular boy band’s song. In One Direction’s video for the single, the group sings on the beaches of Malibu, California.

York said he spontaneously made the video during a tour in southern Vietnam. “I’m infatuated with the pastoral landscape in Vietnam’s rural areas after spending quite some time performing and teaching English there,” he told Tuoi Tre.

York also released a music video titled ‘Que Bac Ba Phi’ (Uncle Ba Phi’s Hometown) last year that featured the Mekong Delta and its locals.
