HCMC engineering students create new fire alarm system
Engineering students at HCMC’s University of Technology have created a new alarm system which uses image-processing software to detect fires. The device is able to send out simultaneous alerts via speaker system, text message and internet, notifying not only those inside the building but also the owner of the building and local emergency response services. In addition to the address of the fire, the device sends local authorities photographic evidence of the blaze as well as Google Maps directions to the site. According to Hoang Dinh Chien, an associate professor at the university, the new fire alarm is more accurate than its traditional counterparts, which rely on heat and smoke sensors to detect a fire and are not equipped to alert local authorities in the event of an emergency.
