It is accepted that enjoying life in Asia also comes with a number of unpleasant consequences. One of the most common is while enjoying the amazing local food it is common to suffer from an upset stomach caused by poor food prep or unhygienic food storage. This leads to developing a parasite ‘occupation’. There are many common parasites. It is recommended that we take de-worming or anti-parasite medicine every three to four months. However, with high levels of pollution, dust and bacteria in our immediate environment, I feel we need to do more for our health on a regular basis.

There are a number of foods, herbs and other stuff you can eat that can help maintain health and kill parasites, enabling you to enjoy the wonders of Vietnamese cuisine while stopping creepy crawlies from setting up camp in your insides. Below are six herb-based foods that are fantastic in helping your natural defence systems repel and kill nasty germs and worms:

Garlic: is our number one herb for killing bad stuff because it is so versatile and easily included into your diet. It helps remove heavy metals from our bodies, which is great when living in city pollution. Fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites all hate garlic.

Cloves: are believed to be the only herb that actually terminates almost all parasite eggs left behind by worms. The clove itself is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. Clove oil is a very good broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent.

Thyme: aids in the anti-parasite war by stimulating the body’s natural defences. Parasites find it hard to grow if the immune system is strong. Thyme oil can also kill parasites in the intestinal tract.

Oil of oregano: another big hitter. A truly powerful and indiscriminate killer that can reset the microbial environment in the intestines. Many studies show the effectiveness of oil of oregano with everything from parasitical infections to cancer. Oregano contains very high levels of antioxidants and is antiparasitic, antiviral, antibacterial and anti fungal.

Chinese Goldthread: Goldthread has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat all types of infections, including bacterial, parasitic and yeast. This is due to a substance called berberine, which is a great broad-spectrum antimicrobial.

Wormwood: another herb that has been a part of Chinese medicine for centuries and is a powerful remedy for intestinal worms. It has also been used in the treatment for cancer. Wormwood has very strong antimicrobial properties and is useful in treating a number of other infections.

To kill parasites and keep your gut healthy, regularly consuming these herbs can keep you fully functional. Parasites, worms and bacteria are a very real and present danger in Asia and a little bit of conscious eating can go a long way to avoiding minor unwanted illnesses.
