Women and believers in equality, come and dance and be empowered.
This Women’s Day, on Saturday 8 March, at McSorley’s in District 2, a group of local expats and Vietnamese women are holding an event from 1pm till 11pm, inspired by the global campaign One Billion Rising.
One in three women will be beaten or raped in their lifetime based on findings by the United Nations. It is that statistic, that one billion, which has led to thousands of grassroots events, like One Billion Rising Saigon, being held worldwide in more than 190 countries.
On this day and through this movement, women and victims of violence will be inspired and united through a positive medium. It is a call to survivors to break the silence and release their stories through art, dance, marches, ritual, song, spoken word, poetry, testimonies and whatever else feels right.
Poetry, dances, speeches and live music will begin at 2pm followed by a DJ set from 7pm.
A fundraiser for The Shelter Collection — a group working to prevent child abuse and supporting victims — will be held during the event, and donations can be made to The Little Rose Shelter for survivors of sexual abuse.
Imagine, one billion women releasing their stories, dancing, speaking out for justice and demanding an end to violence against women and girls.
