Pitchers, a classic sports bar with all the bases covered. Review and photos by Brett Davis.
The ever-so-humble sports bar is an institution in many a country. A place to relax, have a drink, watch a game and eat some comfort food. Pitchers, the new sports bar in District 7, stays true to the formula.
It is very spacious, light and airy, with plenty of televisions on the walls so you can catch all the sporting action. There are also darts, and the first air hockey table I have ever seen in Vietnam, which is a nice addition. Every three weeks the venue also hosts a quiz night.
Pitchers is also a smoke-free place, which makes it very family friendly, although there is a terrace area where you can indulge in a gasper and still keep an eye on the game.
There are a range of beers on tap, including Red Rock, San Miguel Pale (VND 40,000 small / VND 70,000 large) and Sapporo (VND 45,000 small / VND 75,000 large). If you like the dark beers there is Tennent’s Stout (VND 100,000 small / VND 130,000 large), and Magner’s apple cider for the same price.
A range of fresh juices and smoothies are also available, and a Lavazza coffee will set you back only VND 50,000.
The Pitcher’s flatbread pizzas (VND 180,000) are named after, what else, famous baseball pitchers such as Rollie Fingers, Greg Williams and Roger Clemens. These translate, respectively, to a grilled chicken, four cheese and vegetarian pizza.
Given one of the proprietors of the restaurant also owns Lucky Dog, it is not surprising hot dogs (VND 150,000) feature prominently on the menu. There are six to choose from and include the classic frank dog, spicy chorizo and an Aussie beef dog.
Burgers are an essential element of any self-respecting sports bar, and here is no exception. Burgers are VND 180,000 and are served with a side of fries. You can plump for a bacon cheese burger, or burger with blue cheese and onions, or perhaps the hot mess of delicious that is the Aussie burger that comes topped with pineapple, beetroot and a fried egg.
However, if you are up for the challenge you can go for the Big Bob burger, which is a staggering two 150-gram beef patties with double cheese and double bacon. If you survive the heart attack it will only set you back VND 250,000.
There is also a selection of pastas for VND 180,00 for a small serve and VND 220,000 for a large plate. On the grill you can try pork ribs with grilled corn (VND 690,000), an Australian striploin steak with salad and chips (VND 299,000) or Nha Trang barramundi skewers with pineapple cilantro relish (VND 175,000).
Pitchers is a welcome addition to the District 7 eating and drinking scene, and provides a comfortable and friendly environment for the whole family.
