Subway construction in Le Loi creates hard times for local business
While Saigon’s motorists are doing their best to avoid the maze of subway construction around Nguyen Hue and Le Loi, businesses in the surrounding area, too, are feeling the crunch. Over the last several weeks business has plummeted, with some shops in the area reporting as much as an 80 percent decline in sales. Though shop owners have petitioned for reduced taxes and rental fees, authorities and landlords refuse to budge and several proprietors have had to lay off their entire staff in order to cut costs. “We cannot do anything but keep waiting for support from the authorities,” said one shop owner.
