Tan Son Nhat Airport to overload in 2017; expansion not likely
In a report from the HCMC municipal administration, Tan Son Nhat International is expected to reach its maximum threshold of 25 million passengers by 2017, but further expansion for the airport isn’t likely with respect to the city’s current central government-approved development plan. Expansion would also see 641 hectares of land cleared, forcing residents in 140,000 households to relocate.
To resolve this, city officials hope the construction of a multi-billion-dollar international airport in Long Thanh District (50km from HCMC) will help share the burden of Tan Son Nhat. As it stands, Long Thanh airport will not enter its first phase of operation until 2023, which means Tan Son Nhat runs the risk of overloading for six years. As a result, officials have urged the Ministry of Transport to reconsider their schedule and commission Long Thanh’s development as soon as possible.
