Vietnam has highest rate of diabetics in Southeast Asia
Vietnam ranks first in Southeast Asia in rate of diabetics, with 3.7 percent of the population (3.3 million people) with diabetes, the International Diabetes Foundation announced at a conference organised by the National Institute of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders in Ninh Binh.
The number of diabetics in Vietnam is increasing – 211 percent in the last 10 years – not just in cities, but also in mountainous areas and midlands. In addition, more young Vietnamese have been diagnosed with the disease, with cases as young as 11 years old, reports TuoiTre.
Diabetes is the fourth-leading cause of death in the world, causing a loss of five to ten years of life expectancy, according to a report delivered at the conference, which was organised to coincide around World Diabetes Day (14 Nov).
