Vietnam may waive visas for nine nationalities

Passport holders from France, Germany, Spain, the UK, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, India and Canada may soon be able to enter Vietnam without a visa, as tourism authorities are seeking approval from the central government to waive visa requirements for these nationalities. In a survey conducted by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, officials found that western European visitors tend to stay longer and spend more than their fellow travelers, while Australians and Kiwis often visit during low season and India and Canada both provide a considerable number of tourists each year. Though Vietnam already grants visa waivers to ASEAN passport holders as well as a handful of other countries, research from tourism promotion agencies in neighbouring nations suggests that visa waivers increase tourist arrivals. Vietnamese authorities are especially keen on boosting the country’s tourism after riots earlier this year sent many travelers elsewhere for their vacation.
